In the past 30 years, the obesity rate for children has tripled. It’s well known that obesity puts children at a greater risk for heart disease, diabetes, and bone and joint problems. Compounding the risk, obese children are more likely to be obese adults. All the parents I know would do anything in their power to ensure their children’s good health and happiness and help them grow into productive...

Dark green leafy vegetables are good for you. There, I’ve said it and I won’t apologize. Not only are dark green vegetables powerhouses of nutrition, but so are vegetables that are deep orange, yellow or red. The more color it has the more vitamins and minerals it contains. Nothing beats very pale green iceberg lettuce on a burger or in a BLT, but if I’m going to the trouble to eat...

Cereal manufacturers puzzle me. They take whole grains—rice, wheat, oats—that have vitamins, minerals, fiber and taste and completely remake them into a new food. They strip them by removing the germ and bran, they add a lot of sugar and salt to provide taste, and then they fortify the product with vitamins. Why didn’t they save themselves a lot of trouble and just keep the bran and...

Did you ever look at the dates written on dairy products? I purchased heavy cream the other day and noticed that the expiration date was two months away. Initially this seemed wonderful. There was plenty of time to use it before it spoiled. I won’t waste money by having to throw it out because it spoiled before I could use it. While this seemed like an advantage, I couldn’t help...

In the morning, do you reach for a glass of orange juice or the whole orange? The convenience of pouring a glass of juice can’t be beat, but you are paying a price for that convenience. For the best health, your foods need to be varied, nutritious, and fibrous. The orange will beat the juice every time.
The moment a piece of fruit is cut open, it starts to lose some of its nutrients. ...

Has this ever happened to you? You’re sitting down to dinner and the food tastes delicious. You took what was a reasonable portion and you enjoyed every bite. You’re comfortably full, but the food is still on the table and you’re staring at it. It’s almost as if it’s calling to you. It really was delicious. So you say to yourself, “I’ll have just...

Everyone agrees that getting fiber in your diet everyday is important. People worry that they don’t get enough fiber and they often look for foods that have added fiber. One of the makers of artificial sweeteners is now adding fiber to its product. I’m delighted that this company realizes the value of fiber and is serving its customers better by giving them what they need, but why do...

I was buying spinach the other day and the cashier asked me what it was. When I told her it was spinach she told me she had never eaten fresh spinach. If you’re like this young lady, and the only spinach you’ve ever eaten was frozen or canned, you really don’t know what spinach tastes like.
In order to freeze it successfully, the processors must first blanch the fresh spinach. ...

I’m lactose intolerant and dairy foods cause me intestinal pain. I retain water after I eat sugar foods and the next morning my eyes are swollen, my joints hurt and I feel sluggish. Therefore, I don’t eat sugar or dairy foods often; my mouth loves them, but my body hates them. However, I don’t deny myself anything so when I really want ice cream I buy it, enjoy it, and then...
